The Erich McVey workshop in Elk, California. A dream come true, a dream a long time coming. We spent our days in a barn on the rugged California Coast, learning from photographer Erich McVey, whose beautiful wedding film photography has inspired me for years. Swallows flitted in and out of the barn. My hands learned the sturdy, bulky Contax 645 and its delicate film. We ate decadently, marveled at the landscape, rejoiced in one another. We travelled from barn to hillside to oceanside to barn, starting in the early dawns and working all the way until the stars sparkled overhead. We shared our dreams, visions, hopes, ambitions. During the shoots, there was the thrum and click of film cameras, the growling rewind, the physical mechanisms I hardly remember. And the precious 16 chances each roll, an imperative to be slow, still, thoughtful. In my mind, in my dreams, I go back to these days, remembering the feel of them, the hope, the stillness, the wild possibility. These days are emblazoned in me.
